Major cities see violent crime surge as national rates plummet significantly in 2025: survey
Violent crime rates across the United States have shown a decrease in 2025, according to a recent survey conducted by the Major Cities Chiefs Association (MCCA). The survey analyzed data from January to September 2025 compared to the same period in 2024, focusing on four key categories: homicide, rape or sexual assault, robbery, and aggravated assault.
The national trend revealed a decline in total violent crime across all categories:
– Homicide: 4,143 cases in 2025 compared to 5,126 in 2024
– Rape: 20,407 cases in 2025 compared to 21,728 in 2024
– Robbery: 66,501 cases in 2025 compared to 81,860 in 2024
– Aggravated assault: 194,804 cases in 2025 compared to 216,466 in 2024
While the overall trend showed a decrease in violent crime, several cities in the US reported an increase in violent crime rates locally. Some of these cities include:
– Omaha, Nebraska: Witnessed increases in all four categories of violent crime
– Atlanta, Georgia: Reported increases in rape, robbery, and aggravated assault
– Columbus, Ohio: Noted increases in robbery and aggravated assault
– Los Angeles County, California: Saw increases in rape and aggravated assault
– Tampa, Florida: Recorded increases in rape and robbery
– Suffolk County, New York: Reported increases in homicide and robbery
– Wichita, Kansas: Experienced increases in homicide and rape
– Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania: Noted increases in rape and aggravated assault
– Denver, Colorado: Recorded an increase in rape
– Philadelphia, Pennsylvania: Saw a rise in rape cases
Despite these local increases, the overall trend of violent crime is on a downward trajectory in major US cities. President Donald Trump’s administration has been actively focusing on combating violent crime, launching crime operations in various cities and deploying the National Guard to assist local law enforcement agencies.
As the nation continues to address the issue of violent crime, it is essential for local communities and law enforcement agencies to work together to ensure the safety and well-being of all residents.
