Man on pretrial release tried to kill CTA passenger by pushing him onto the tracks: prosecutors

A shocking incident unfolded at the Harlem Blue Line station in Forest Park on Monday morning when a seven-time convicted felon, Tommie O. Brown, attempted to kill a man with an intellectual disability. Brown, who has been non-compliant with court orders in a pending misdemeanor case, has now been charged with attempted first-degree murder for his violent attack.

According to prosecutors, the 59-year-old victim, who was born with an intellectual disability, was standing on the down ramp from the station entrance when Brown approached him and demanded a dollar. When the victim informed Brown that he did not have any money, Brown became aggressive and pushed the man to the ground. Despite the victim’s attempts to move towards the platform, Brown continued his attack by striking him in the head and shoving him with enough force to knock him onto the Blue Line tracks.

As the victim lay injured and unable to move due to multiple fractures in his knees, a train was approaching the station. Thankfully, CTA personnel and a bystander intervened, stopping the train and cutting power to the third rail. Forest Park police quickly apprehended Brown, who continued his violent behavior by spitting on officers during his arrest and at the police station.

Brown’s criminal history includes numerous felony convictions, ranging from aggravated unlawful use of a weapon to drug offenses. He has also faced a staggering 40 misdemeanor cases in Cook County since 2001. Despite being ordered by Judge Luciano Panici Jr. to check in with the court’s pretrial officers, Brown consistently ignored these orders, leading to his continued release and subsequent violations.

The repeated failure of the justice system to hold Brown accountable for his actions culminated in the horrific incident at the Harlem Blue Line station. The victim, who suffered serious injuries as a result of Brown’s attack, narrowly escaped being struck by an oncoming train thanks to the quick actions of bystanders and law enforcement.
