Man United humiliated in penalty shootout loss to 4th-division team Grimsby Town in League Cup
Manchester United suffered a humiliating defeat at the hands of fourth-tier Grimsby Town in the second round of the English League Cup. The match, which took place at the 9,000-capacity Blundell Park in Grimsby, ended in a marathon penalty shootout with Grimsby emerging victorious with a 12-11 scoreline.
United, managed by Ruben Amorim, found themselves trailing 2-0 at halftime before late goals from Bryan Mbeumo and Harry Maguire forced a 2-2 draw in regulation. However, Mbeumo missed the decisive penalty, handing Grimsby the win and leaving United winless in three games this season.
The result will undoubtedly go down as one of the most embarrassing in United’s history, especially coming off the back of a disappointing 15th-place finish in the Premier League last season. Grimsby’s jubilant fans stormed the field to celebrate with the players after Mbeumo’s missed penalty sealed United’s fate.
Grimsby, currently fourth in League Two, fielded a team featuring several academy graduates and a Faeroe Islands international. In contrast, United boasted a lineup with £200 million worth of attacking talent in Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha, and Benjamin Sesko. Cunha also failed in the shootout, with his weak attempt saved, while Sesko took United’s 10th penalty ahead of goalkeeper Andre Onana.
Amorim, under increasing pressure after just 16 wins from 44 matches in charge, sat in the dugout during the shootout, unable to watch the kicks. The defeat adds to United’s woes, having failed to qualify for European competition last season and only reaching the second round of the League Cup for the first time since 2014, when they were thrashed 4-0 by MK Dons.
The shocking result highlights the challenges facing Amorim and his team as they aim to turn their season around. With the pressure mounting, United will need to regroup quickly and bounce back from this humiliating defeat.
