Maniac accused of randomly shoving 72-year-old into NYC subway is Russian doctor: sources

A shocking incident occurred on New Year’s Day in the Bronx, where a 29-year-old Russian doctor, Anton Aleshin, allegedly shoved a 72-year-old man into a moving train at the 161-Yankee Stadium station. The elderly victim, who was a complete stranger to Aleshin, was knocked unconscious and sustained scratches on his face during the unprovoked attack.

Aleshin, who claimed to be halfway through a residency program at Brookdale University Hospital Medical Center, had previously worked as a doctor in Russia for 11 years. He now faces multiple charges including attempted murder, assault, attempted assault, reckless endangerment, and harassment. Despite pleading not guilty during his Bronx Criminal Court arraignment, he was ordered to be held without bail.

The victim was taken to Lincoln Medical Center and was reported to be in stable condition following the incident. This brazen act marked the city’s first subway shoving incident of the year 2026, raising concerns about subway safety. This incident came shortly after Governor Kathy Hochul announced a $77 million commitment to enhance police presence in subway stations citywide, emphasizing the importance of public safety.

Hochul had recently highlighted a decrease in transit crime, with subway crime reaching its lowest levels in 16 years and an overall reduction of 15% from 2019. Despite these efforts to improve safety, the incident involving Anton Aleshin serves as a stark reminder of the need for continued vigilance and security measures in public transportation systems.
