Massive Google Cloud outage disrupts popular internet services

NEW YORK (AP) — A widespread disruption in popular online services was experienced on Thursday due to ongoing issues at Google Cloud.
According to Downdetector, which tracks outages, tens of thousands of users of platforms like Spotify and Discord noticed issues with their services early in the afternoon.
Reports of outages for music streaming service Spotify peaked around 3 p.m. Eastern Standard Time before gradually subsiding, with some users reporting that their access had been restored.
Google’s Cloud status page indicated that an incident with their systems impacted clients in the U.S. and around the world. The company mentioned that services are in the process of recovery after their engineers identified and started mitigating the issue.
“We have pinpointed the root cause and implemented necessary measures,” stated Google Cloud. However, there is currently no specific timeframe for when the problem will be fully resolved.
Google Cloud, which hosts a significant number of internet services, has emerged as the fastest-growing segment of Alphabet Inc., despite the majority of the company’s revenue coming from Google’s search engine. In the previous year, Google Cloud generated revenue of $43.2 billion, marking a 31% increase from 2023. In comparison, Alphabet’s overall revenue grew by 14% during the same period.
