Mayor Adams’s vow to hire 5,000 new cops rightly exposes defunder-in-chief Mamdani

In a bold move, Mayor Eric Adams has announced plans to add 5,000 new police officers to bolster the depleted ranks of the NYPD. This decision has brought to light the anti-policing stance of Zohran Mamdani, a staunch NYPD defunder and mayoral candidate.

The need for additional officers is evident, as the current headcount of the NYPD is at its lowest since 1990, a time when crime rates in the city were high. The shrinking of the ranks began in 2019 due to retirements and officers leaving for opportunities elsewhere. The anti-policing agenda pushed by New York politicians has made it increasingly challenging for officers to work in the city, resulting in a monthly exodus of 200 officers.

Mamdani, who has been vocal about defunding the police, criticized Adams’ decision, emphasizing that safety is not solely a question of headcount but rather a broader issue. He proposed the creation of a “Department of Community Safety” that would rely on social workers, violence interrupters, and peer counselors to handle interactions with the public, diverting responsibilities away from the NYPD.

While Mamdani frames his plan as promoting safety, critics argue that it prioritizes labeling over actual delivery of safety measures that only the police can provide. Mamdani’s endorsement of keeping Commissioner Jessica Tisch in her role at One Police Plaza appears contradictory, as Tisch has expressed support for Adams’ hiring plan, citing the positive impact of new officers on community safety.

Mamdani’s proposed policies, including keeping NYPD ranks depleted, dismantling key units, and altering response protocols for certain calls, conflict with Tisch’s approach to policing. It is evident that Mamdani’s vision for public safety diverges from Tisch’s philosophy, making it unlikely for her to continue serving under his leadership.

Adams’ decision to add more officers highlights Mamdani’s persistent advocacy for “Defund the Police” policies, despite claims of moving away from this stance. As the mayoral race heats up, the contrast between Adams’ practical approach to governance and Mamdani’s ideological positions becomes more apparent, underscoring the challenges Mamdani may face in leading the city effectively.
