Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani to ditch rent-stabilized Queens apartment — and move into Gracie Mansion
New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani recently announced his decision to move from his rent-stabilized apartment in Queens to Gracie Mansion with his wife, Rama, after his inauguration. The move comes as a result of prioritizing his family’s safety.
Mamdani, a Democratic socialist, has been residing in a $2,300 one-bedroom apartment in Astoria. In a statement, he explained the reason behind the move, stating, “My wife Rama and I have made the decision to move into Gracie Mansion in January.”
The couple expressed their fondness for their current home, mentioning activities like cooking together in the kitchen, sharing elevator rides with neighbors, and enjoying the sounds of music and laughter from neighboring apartments. However, Mamdani emphasized that the decision was made to ensure their family’s safety and to focus entirely on implementing the affordability agenda that New Yorkers voted for.
Gracie Mansion, located at East End Avenue and 88th Street in Manhattan, has traditionally been the residence for NYC mayors. The move signifies a new chapter for Mamdani as he prepares to take on his role as mayor and fulfill his campaign promises to the people of New York City.
The transition to Gracie Mansion will allow Mamdani to fully dedicate himself to serving the city and addressing the pressing issues of affordability and social justice. As he prepares to take office, the move reflects his commitment to his new role and the responsibilities that come with it.
