MGM+’s Stephen King Adaptation Intrigues
“The Institute” is a new science-fiction horror thriller series based on Stephen King’s 2019 novel of the same name. Adapted for television by Jack Bender, the show delves into the horrors of unchecked regimes and the bravery of children who resist them. The story kicks off with 14-year-old Luke Ellis, a gifted teenager who is abruptly kidnapped from his home by a mysterious extraction team.
Meanwhile, Tim Jamieson, a former police officer turned drifter, stumbles upon a small town in Maine and becomes entangled in a web of conspiracy surrounding a hazardous materials plant. As Luke finds himself in The Institute, a secretive organization that conducts tests on children, he teams up with fellow recruits to plan a daring escape. Their plans are accelerated with the arrival of Avery, the youngest recruit, while Tim’s path leads him straight to The Institute.
While the premise of the show is intriguing, the pacing falters towards the end, with the climax feeling somewhat lackluster. The true motivations behind The Institute are revealed in the final episodes, but some unanswered questions leave the ending feeling open-ended. Despite its flaws, “The Institute” remains a captivating watch, touching on relevant societal issues and showcasing King’s signature storytelling.
The series is set to premiere on MGM+ on July 13, with new episodes airing weekly on Sundays. Fans of Stephen King and science-fiction thrillers will find “The Institute” to be a compelling addition to their watchlist.
