Michigan football fined millions of dollars in sign-stealing scandal

The NCAA has handed down severe penalties to the Michigan Wolverines football program in connection with a sign-stealing scandal that has plagued the team for nearly two years. The fines imposed on the program are expected to exceed $20 million, including a $50,000 fine, a 10% reduction in the football program’s budget, a 10% reduction in scholarships for the 2025-26 season, and a fine equivalent to the anticipated loss of postseason revenue for the 2025 and 2026 seasons.

In addition to the financial penalties, coach Sherrone Moore has been suspended for three games, including a self-imposed two-game suspension by Michigan. Moore will also be banned from the first game of the 2026-27 season and has received a two-year show-cause order. Former low-level staffer Connor Stalions, who was involved in the sign-stealing operation, has been issued an eight-year show-cause order.

Former Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh, who now coaches the Los Angeles Chargers, faces a 10-year show-cause order following the conclusion of his previous four-year order. Both Harbaugh and Stalions will be prohibited from engaging in all athletically related activities.

The NCAA does not have specific rules against stealing signs, but it does prohibit schools from sending scouts to the games of future opponents and using electronic equipment to record another team’s signals. The investigation into the sign-stealing scandal began in 2023, with allegations that Michigan used an in-person scouting and sign-stealing operation conducted by Stalions. Stalions was suspended by the school and later resigned.

Despite the penalties imposed by the NCAA, Big Ten Commissioner Tony Petitti has suggested that Michigan’s football program should not face further sanctions related to the sign-stealing scandal. The Wolverines are set to open the season on August 30 against New Mexico State and will face Oklahoma on September 6.
