Microsoft prepared to walk away from high-stakes talks with OpenAI: report

According to a report by the Financial Times on Wednesday, Microsoft is considering abandoning its negotiations with OpenAI over their alliance.

If the two parties cannot agree on crucial issues such as Microsoft’s future stake in OpenAI, the tech giant may pause discussions with the ChatGPT maker, as per sources familiar with the matter cited in the report.

Microsoft intends to use its existing commercial contract to access OpenAI’s technology until 2030, as reported by the FT.

Microsoft and OpenAI have not responded to requests for comment from Reuters.

OpenAI is reportedly contemplating accusing Microsoft of anticompetitive behavior within their agreement, as per the Wall Street Journal on Monday. The companies are in discussions to amend Microsoft’s investment terms, including its future equity stake in the AI startup.

Microsoft’s significant investments in OpenAI have solidified its position as a key player in the artificial intelligence industry.

OpenAI, requiring approval from Microsoft, its primary supporter, plans to transition into a public-benefit corporation to facilitate raising additional capital.
