NBC Cheerleading Sitcom Is Iconic
NBC’s latest sitcom, “Stumble,” created by Liz and Jeff Astrof and executive produced by Monica Aldama from Netflix’s “Cheer,” brings audiences into the high-stakes world of junior college cheerleading with a hilarious mockumentary twist. Following the success of the “Cheer” docuseries, fans will enjoy this light-hearted take on the competitive cheerleading arena, complete with a cast of vibrant characters and a determined coach.
Set in the fictional town of Wichita Flats, Texas, the show introduces Courteney Potter, played by the perfectly cast Jenn Lyon. Courteney is a dedicated coach aiming for her 15th championship, but her plans are derailed when she is fired from Sammy Davis Sr. Junior College for inappropriate behavior. Encouraged by her husband Boone, played by Taran Killam, Courteney takes on a new challenge at Headleston Junior College in Oklahoma, where she must lead a lackluster cheer squad to the Daytona Cheerleading Championships.
Headleston’s cheer program is far from impressive, with only one member, Madonna, who struggles with narcolepsy. Undeterred, Courteney recruits a diverse group of cheerleaders, including a TikTok sensation, a football player, a kleptomaniac, and even tries to convince a former star flyer to join the team. Despite the odds stacked against her, Courteney is determined to lead Headleston to victory.
“Stumble” excels in capturing the essence of a mockumentary sitcom, drawing inspiration from beloved shows like “The Office” and “Parks and Recreation.” Each character brings a unique dynamic to the narrative, from Courteney’s former squad member Steven to the rival coach Tammy, played by Kristin Chenoweth. The interactions between the characters are filled with humor and witty banter, making for an entertaining viewing experience.
Critics who have previewed the first two episodes praise the sharp writing and attention to detail, reflecting Aldama’s expertise in the cheerleading world. While viewers unfamiliar with “Cheer” can still enjoy the show, fans of the docuseries will appreciate the deeper understanding it provides. With a talented cast and impeccable comedic timing, “Stumble” promises to deliver laughs and heartwarming moments in equal measure.
“Stumble” premieres on NBC on November 7, with new episodes airing weekly on Fridays. Don’t miss out on this delightful sitcom that will leave you cheering for more.
