Netflix Series Reflects On America at 250
As we approach the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States of America, it is evident that our nation is at a critical juncture. The history of the country is marked by moments of unprecedented change, and director Brian Knappenberger’s new docuseries on Netflix, “The American Experiment,” executive produced by Tom Hanks, delves into the roots of our nation and the principles that shaped it.
The first few episodes of the series explore the tensions between the 13 colonies and the British Crown, leading to events such as the Boston Massacre and the Boston Tea Party. With insights from prominent figures like former vice presidents Kamala Harris and Mike Pence, as well as historians, the series paints a vivid picture of the Revolutionary War and the founding of the nation.
One key theme that emerges in “The American Experiment” is the lasting impact of slavery and racism on the foundation of the country. The compromises made during the crafting of the Constitution to appease Southern states allowed the institution of slavery to persist, leading to deep divisions that continue to shape American society today.
The series also reflects on contemporary issues, such as the Electoral College and the peaceful transfer of power. Former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton criticizes the Electoral College as an “abomination,” while Pence recounts his experience ratifying the 2020 election results despite pressure from President Trump.
Looking ahead to the future, “The American Experiment” raises important questions about the strength of American democracy. The series explores the weaknesses of Congress, the power dynamics of the Supreme Court, and the challenges of enacting new Constitutional amendments.
As we celebrate the 250th year of our nation, “The American Experiment” serves as a timely reminder of the complexities and contradictions that have shaped America’s history. Whether we emerge as a more perfect union or succumb to our own shortcomings remains to be seen. As Benjamin Franklin famously said, “A republic, if you can keep it.”
Don’t miss the premiere of “The American Experiment” on Netflix on June 24th.
