NYC photog shoots stunning video of lightning striking One World Trade

Lightning struck One World Trade Center once again, captured by a local photographer during a recent storm. Max Guliani, 34, strategically positioned himself at a Hudson River Park pier on Manhattan’s West Side to witness nature’s spectacular display.

As the storm approached, Guliani grabbed his smartphone and aimed it towards the iconic 1,776-foot tower. He managed to capture several dramatic lightning strikes, including a direct hit on the antenna, with sailboats swaying in the storm-churned waters of the Hudson River in the background.

Guliani, who enjoys chasing storms with friends around New York, finds the experience exhilarating. He mentioned that lightning strikes are rare in New York, usually occurring during hot days when temperatures are near 90 degrees.

Despite the friendly competition to capture the best shots, Guliani primarily appreciates the opportunity to witness “nature’s fury” from a safe spot on the pier, sheltered from the rain.

One World Trade Center, being the tallest building in the US, is a common target for lightning strikes. According to AccuWeather, the tower experienced 189 strikes between 2015 and 2020. However, the Willis Tower in Chicago tops the list with around 250 strikes during the same period.
