One of Rabbi Kass’s memorable acts of compassion occurred in 1981 when he successfully negotiated with a Jewish man who had taken a woman hostage. Using his quick thinking and kindness, he managed to disarm the hostage-taker by offering him pastrami sandwiches from the famous Carnegie Deli.
