Outdoor retailer to drop huge deals in California amid liquidation

A beloved equestrian retailer is being put out to pasture.

Dover Saddlery, one of the country’s most well-known sellers of riding apparel, horse equipment, saddles, and tack, is on the verge of launching going-out-of-business sales at its remaining stores unless a last-minute rescue deal materializes, as reported by the Boston Globe.

The 50-year-old company once had around 30 stores across the country, including locations in Moorpark and Moraga, California.

The chain’s elite Laguna Hills and Sacramento stores have already shuttered.

Boston-based restructuring firm Gordan Brothers acquired Dover in late April and is gearing up for liquidation sales if a viable deal to sell some or most of the company doesn’t materialize, the Globe stated.

Dover has not filed for Chapter 11 or Chapter 7 bankruptcy, as per TheStreet.

The company’s financial struggles became public earlier this month when it issued a Massachusetts WARN notice indicating that 112 workers at its Littleton headquarters and distribution center could face layoffs between July 7 and July 20.

The notice stated that the closures would be contingent on Dover’s ability to secure funding or sell the business.

Founded in 1975 by top US equestrian riders Jim and David Powers, Dover grew into the nation’s largest equestrian retailer, as reported by the Globe.

However, unless a “heroic” intervention occurs, liquidation sales may soon commence at the remaining stores, a source informed the outlet.

For horse owners and riders, this could mark the end of a well-known name in the equine world.
