Pennsylvania Bank Issues Urgent Alert After AI Application Triggers Data Breach, Exposing Sensitive Customer Info
A recent data breach at a Pennsylvania-based bank has been linked to the use of artificial intelligence (AI) software, according to a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). Community Bank disclosed that the breach, which occurred earlier this month, exposed customer names, social security numbers, and dates of birth.
The breach was the result of an unauthorized AI-based software application being used internally at the bank to handle sensitive customer information. Upon discovering the breach, Community Bank took immediate steps to secure the affected information and launched an internal investigation with the help of external cybersecurity experts. The investigation is ongoing as the bank works to determine the full scope and root cause of the incident.
Despite the breach, the bank reassured customers that there was no disruption to its operations, customer access to accounts or services, payment systems, or core IT infrastructure. However, due to the nature and volume of the compromised information, the bank deemed the incident to be material as of May 7, 2026.
This disclosure comes at a time when Verizon has reported a significant increase in the use of unauthorized AI applications on corporate devices, posing a growing cybersecurity risk in workplaces. The report highlights the rise of “Shadow AI,” where employees use unapproved AI tools at work, as a common cause of non-malicious data leakage. The increased use of AI tools by employees has led to a surge in data exfiltration risks associated with unapproved platforms.
As companies grapple with the challenges of securing sensitive information in an increasingly digital world, incidents like the one at Community Bank serve as a reminder of the importance of implementing robust cybersecurity measures and monitoring employee use of technology tools.
