Person of interest in Brown University shooting released
The authorities made a surprising announcement late Sunday night regarding the apprehension of a 24-year-old man in connection with the Brown University mass shooting. Benjamin Erickson, who was taken into custody at a hotel near the university, has been released as investigators now believe they had the wrong person. The real gunman responsible for the tragic incident that left two students dead and nine others injured is still at large.
Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Neronha explained the challenges in gathering evidence and following leads immediately after the shooting. Despite initially pointing to Erickson as a person of interest based on some evidence, the investigation now shifts in a different direction. Neronha emphasized that there is no basis to consider Erickson a suspect and that further steps are necessary in the case.
The unidentified gunman entered an economics class’ final review session and began firing shots with a handgun, discharging over 40 rounds before fleeing the scene. Witnesses reported hearing the assailant shouting unintelligibly during the attack. While Erickson claimed he was in his hotel room all day, authorities are now focusing on finding the actual perpetrator.
Criticism was directed at the leaks of information regarding Erickson’s involvement, with Neronha expressing concern about the difficulty of containing such details once they are made public. The FBI has joined the investigation, setting up a tip line and seeking additional video evidence to identify the suspect seen in released footage walking near the campus in all black with a covered face.
Providence Mayor Brett Smiley assured the community of enhanced security measures in the area to provide comfort and a sense of normalcy post-shooting. Despite no credible threats received by Brown University, Governor Daniel McKee confirmed federal support in the case. The focus now remains on locating the actual gunman responsible for the tragic events at Brown University.
