Healthcare Firm Faces Cybersecurity Attack Putting Americans’ Data at Risk

A healthcare firm in the United States is grappling with a cybersecurity attack that has put the sensitive data of hundreds of thousands of Americans in jeopardy. Southern Illinois Dermatology, as reported by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office for Civil Rights, has disclosed a hacking and IT incident affecting 160,312 individuals, with the breach involving a network server.

According to a notice sent to consumers in April, the company became aware of the compromise within its network in November 2025. It promptly initiated an investigation with the assistance of third-party cybersecurity experts. The subsequent review revealed that certain files containing personal and protected health information were potentially accessed or acquired by an unauthorized third party in March.

The compromised data may have included names, addresses, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, phone numbers, email addresses, and medical record numbers. While the exact information accessed varied by individual, Southern Illinois Dermatology stated that there were no indications of identity theft or fraud stemming from the incident at the time the notices were issued.

Reports from HIPAA Journal indicated that unauthorized access to parts of the network storing patient data was confirmed during the investigation. Furthermore, it was noted that files may have been duplicated by the unauthorized party. Notification letters began circulating on April 2, 2026, revealing that a threat group claimed responsibility for the breach and even posted sample data online.

In response to the cybersecurity incident, Southern Illinois Dermatology has implemented measures to bolster its cybersecurity practices and fortify its network against future attacks.
