As summer approaches and Americans start planning their vacations, one thing is clear – airfares are on the rise. The increase in airline ticket prices can be attributed to higher oil and jet fuel costs, which have surged due to tensions related to the Iran war. Experts in the aviation industry are advising travelers to act quickly and secure their travel plans before prices climb even higher.

Henry Harteveldt, an airline industry analyst with Atmosphere Research Group, emphasized the importance of booking flights promptly. He warned against waiting in hopes of a price drop, stating that fares are unlikely to decrease in the near future. For those looking to save money, Harteveldt suggested considering traveling later in the summer when demand typically decreases, and jet fuel prices may stabilize.

Jet fuel prices, which make up a significant portion of airlines’ operating costs, have risen by over $2 a gallon in recent months. As a result, airlines are passing on some of these increased expenses to passengers. According to data from Kayak, the average cost of a domestic round-trip flight has gone up by 18% to $358 compared to the previous year. International flights have also seen a price hike, with round-trip economy fares to foreign destinations now averaging $1,064.

In March, airfares saw a nearly 15% increase compared to the same period last year, with major carriers like United Airlines raising their fares by 15% to 20%. To further offset rising fuel costs, airlines such as Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, Delta, JetBlue, Southwest Airlines, and United have raised their baggage fees. Some carriers have also opted to cut less profitable routes to reduce expenses, with United planning to reduce its flight volume by 5% this summer.
