Roblox to introduce age-based accounts in latest effort to shore up safety measures

Roblox Corporation announced on Monday that it will be implementing new age-based accounts for young users on its online gaming platform. This move comes as part of the company’s efforts to enhance safety measures and provide a more tailored experience for users of different age groups.

Starting in early June, Roblox will automatically assign users between the ages of 5 to 8 to a Roblox Kids account, while users aged 9 to 15 will be assigned to a separate account called Roblox Select. These age-based accounts will allow for content, communication, and parental controls to be more closely aligned with the users’ ages. Users under the age of 9 will not have access to the chat function, while users aged 9 to 15 will have limited chat capabilities. Once users reach the age of 16, they will have full access to the platform, with the exception of restricted content reserved for users aged 18 and older.

In addition to the age-based accounts, Roblox will also provide parents with more control over their children’s gaming experience. Parents will be able to block specific games and manage direct chat features to ensure a safer online environment for their children.

These new safety measures come in response to lawsuits from families alleging that Roblox has not done enough to protect children from harmful content and interactions with older users. Roblox, a virtual gaming platform that allows users to create and play games with others, has faced scrutiny over its safety practices in the past.

According to Roblox co-founder and CEO Dave Baszucki, over 150 million people use the platform every day. Baszucki has emphasized the company’s commitment to safety, stating that he believes their efforts will set a new standard for other gaming and social apps.
