Russia ‘didn’t care’ about Trump’s weapons for Ukraine, tariff threats, official says
The conflict between Russia and Ukraine escalated further overnight as Russia continued its relentless bombardment of Ukraine. This continued onslaught came shortly after President Donald Trump’s announcement of supplying Ukraine with new military equipment and White House threats of imposing further economic measures against Moscow.
Ukraine’s air force reported that Russia targeted multiple regions overnight using 267 drones, with around 200 being Shahed attack drones and the rest being decoys. The air force managed to shoot down or suppress 244 drones, with 23 drones impacting in seven locations and falling debris reported in nine locations.
On the other side, Russia’s Defense Ministry claimed that its forces downed at least 70 Ukrainian drones overnight, with the Voronezh region bordering northeastern Ukraine being one of the areas targeted. This resulted in at least 24 people being injured in that region, according to Governor Aleksandr Gusev.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov mentioned that Russian President Vladimir Putin would make a decision on how to respond to Trump’s statements. Dmitry Medvedev, the former Russian president and current deputy chairman of the Security Council, dismissed Trump’s “theatrical ultimatum,” stating that Russia was unfazed by the U.S. president’s remarks.
Reports surfaced that Trump had asked Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy about the possibility of Ukrainian forces striking Moscow and St. Petersburg. The White House confirmed this discussion, with Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt clarifying that Trump was merely asking a question and not encouraging further violence.
Trump’s announcement of supplying Ukraine with new military equipment, including Patriot surface-to-air missile systems, was met with mixed reactions. While Zelenskyy expressed gratitude for the support, concerns were raised about the effectiveness of such measures in ending the conflict.
In response to Trump’s threats of imposing severe tariffs on Russia and its allies, questions were raised about the potential impact on global trade. Despite the uncertainties, Zelenskyy remained cautiously optimistic, emphasizing the need for immediate military assistance to deter further Russian aggression.
The Senate proposed imposing secondary sanctions of up to 500% on nations doing business with Russia, a move aimed at increasing pressure on Putin to end the conflict. Trump indicated openness to such measures, highlighting the need for a coordinated effort to bring about a peaceful resolution to the crisis.
As the conflict in Ukraine intensifies, the international community is closely monitoring the developments and the effectiveness of diplomatic efforts in de-escalating the situation. The road to peace remains uncertain, but with concerted efforts and support from allies, there is hope for a resolution to the ongoing crisis.
