Ryan Coogler’s ‘X-Files’ Pilot Casts Himesh Patel

Himesh Patel has landed a lead role in the highly anticipated reboot of “The X-Files” at Hulu, under the direction of Ryan Coogler. The announcement of Patel’s casting comes after Danielle Deadwyler was previously announced as part of the cast for the pilot, which was greenlit by Hulu in February.

The official description of the show reveals that Patel and Deadwyler will play two FBI agents who are assigned to a division dedicated to investigating unexplained phenomena. However, they are not portraying new versions of the iconic characters Fox Mulder and Dana Scully.

This project marks a reunion for Patel and Deadwyler, who previously worked together on the HBO Max miniseries “Station Eleven.” Patel received critical acclaim for his role in the series, earning an Emmy nomination. His impressive resume also includes appearances in HBO’s “Avenue 5” and “The Franchise,” as well as the Amazon series “Bait.” Patel has also made a mark in the film industry with roles in “Yesterday” and Christopher Nolan’s “Tenet,” with whom he is set to collaborate again on Nolan’s upcoming project based on “The Odyssey.”

The talented actor is represented by 42, WME, Johnson Shapiro Slewett & Kole, and Tapestry London. On the creative side, Coogler will be handling the writing, directing, and executive producing duties for the pilot through his Proximity Media production company. Jennifer Yale has been tapped as the showrunner and executive producer, with Sev Ohanian, Zinzi Coogler, and original “X-Files” creator Chris Carter also serving as executive producers.

The idea for Coogler’s take on “The X-Files” first surfaced in 2023 when Carter mentioned that Coogler had expressed interest in reviving the series with a more diverse cast. While this will be the first reboot of the iconic show, it is not the first time it has returned to screens since its original run ended in 2001. Fox revived the series for two additional seasons in 2016 and 2018, with original stars Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny reprising their roles.

As of now, Anderson and Duchovny have not been confirmed to appear in Coogler’s pilot. With such a stellar creative team and cast in place, the “X-Files” reboot is shaping up to be a must-watch for fans of the original series and newcomers alike.
