Safeway to close Lakewood grocery store this weekend
Safeway is set to permanently close its Lakewood store located at 9160 W. Colfax Ave., near Garrison Street, by this Saturday.
The decision to close the store was made after careful consideration, according to a Safeway spokesperson who spoke to 9News, which first reported the announcement.
Heather Halpape, director of communications for Safeway’s Mountain West Division, explained in an email to JS, “With our focus on growth, we continuously evaluate the performance of our stores and occasionally it’s necessary to close locations that do not meet financial expectations.”
Halpape added, “Every effort will be made to transfer associates to one of our other Safeway stores throughout the Denver Metro area. While closing this location was not an easy decision, we remain committed to growing our business and reinvesting resources into existing Safeway stores across Colorado.”
Currently, Safeway operates approximately 922 stores in the U.S., including 102 stores in Colorado.
In Lakewood, Safeway has two other locations at 11088 W Jewell Dr. and 13111 W. Alameda Pkwy.
Meanwhile, a King Soopers store at 5050 E. Arapahoe Rd. in Centennial is also preparing to cease operations this month, with its last day of business scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 16.
King Soopers spokesperson Jessica Trowbridge explained in an email statement to JS that the closure is part of a larger company-wide initiative to operate more efficiently and ensure long-term business health.
Trowbridge assured that each affected employee will have the opportunity to transfer to a new location.
The decision to close the Centennial King Soopers store comes following an announcement by its parent company Kroger in June that around 60 underperforming stores will be closed over the next 18 months.
