Sarah Hartsfield sentenced to life in prison for killing latest husband

Sarah Hartsfield, a five-time bride and former US Army sergeant from Texas, has been sentenced to life in prison for the murder of her latest husband, Joseph Hartsfield. The 50-year-old mother of four was found guilty of poisoning Joseph with a fatal dose of insulin in 2023, seven years after she fatally shot her then-fiancé.

The high-profile trial shed light on Sarah’s troubling past relationships, with Chambers County Assistant District Attorney Mallory Vargas claiming that Sarah expected to get away with murder because it was something she had done in the past. The jury deliberated for just two hours before finding her guilty of murder.

Sarah was arrested in February 2023 after Joseph, who had diabetes for two decades, died in the hospital from complications related to toxic insulin exposure. During the trial, it was revealed that Sarah and Joseph had been considering leaving his wife for weeks before his death, but Sarah did whatever she could to stop him.

Joseph’s sister testified that he had expressed concerns about Sarah killing him in his sleep. Evidence presented in court showed that Sarah injected him with a deadly dose of insulin and delayed calling 911 for hours.

Her attorney, Case Darwin, maintained that Joseph was responsible for his own death due to medication that made him more sensitive to insulin. However, Sarah’s history of relationships ending under violent or troubling circumstances raised red flags.

In 2018, Sarah confessed to shooting dead her fiancé, David Bragg, at their Minnesota home. The killing was ruled a justifiable act of self-defense at the time, but prosecutors have since reopened the case following her murder charge.

No additional charges have been filed in the case, but Sheriff Brian Hawthorne remarked that other cases in other states have been reopened, suggesting similar scenarios. Sarah’s four former ex-husbands also raised concerns, with allegations of threats, assault, and plotting against new spouses.

Despite her tumultuous past, Sarah married Joseph Hartsfield in 2022, leading to his tragic death in 2023. The sentencing of Sarah Hartsfield to life in prison serves as a reminder of the consequences of her actions and the impact they have had on those around her.
