Scammers Impersonating Bank of America Steal $41,000 From Customer – Now He’s at Risk of Losing His Home: Report
An Elderly Veteran Faces Homelessness After Falling Victim to Scammers Impersonating Bank of America
An 82-year-old military veteran, Richard Runyan, is in danger of losing his home after being targeted by scammers posing as representatives from Bank of America. According to a report by KIII-TV, Runyan was contacted by fraudsters who claimed that his account was experiencing suspicious activity.
Still grieving the recent loss of his wife, Donna, Runyan was caught off guard by the call and felt pressured to act quickly to protect his finances. The scammers convinced him to withdraw $41,000 from his account, including cash and a credit card, under the false pretense that his money was at risk of being stolen.
Regrettably, Runyan later realized that he had been deceived and now faces the grim reality of potential homelessness due to the significant financial loss. In a desperate attempt to secure his living situation, he has set up a GoFundMe page and is reaching out to the community for assistance in covering his daily expenses and preventing foreclosure on his home.
Bank of America has issued a statement addressing the incident, expressing sympathy for Runyan’s situation and emphasizing their commitment to combating fraud and protecting consumers. The bank highlighted their efforts to educate employees on elder abuse prevention and provide resources like Better Money Habits and the Bank of America Security Center to help customers safeguard their accounts.
Ultimately, the root of the problem lies with criminals who exploit hardworking individuals like Runyan, and Bank of America vows to collaborate with authorities to hold perpetrators accountable for their actions.
