Silicon Valley giant slashes more jobs in AI boom bloodbath

The tech industry sees more job cuts as Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, lays off thousands of employees in Silicon Valley.

According to Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) filings released on Thursday, 2,212 employees were let go at the Menlo Park headquarters, and an additional 213 were cut at the Sunnyvale office.

WARN filings mandate that employers notify employees of mass layoffs, and Meta had previously announced plans to reduce its workforce by 10% in May due to the impact of artificial intelligence on the industry.

CEO Mark Zuckerberg mentioned in a memo that the company is undergoing transformation and emphasized the importance of AI in shaping the future of technology.

The layoffs in the Bay Area follow similar trends in the tech industry as companies like Webflow and others make significant workforce changes due to the evolving landscape influenced by AI.

Notably, more than 140,000 tech jobs have been cut this year, with AI playing a central role in the restructuring efforts. Major tech companies like Intuit, Cisco, and LinkedIn are also adjusting their workforce to adapt to the changing industry.

Employees affected by the layoffs will receive compensation based on their years of service, with Meta spokesperson Tracy Clayton stating that the company is implementing various changes to realign its teams.
