South LA teen killed after firework explosion
A tragic incident occurred in the Vermont Knolls neighborhood of South LA, where a 17-year-old boy lost his life due to a high-powered, illegal firework explosion in a backyard. The blast was so intense that residents mistook it for a bomb going off. The incident took place around 9:30 p.m. on the 400 block of West 84th Street.
Emergency responders found the boy in critical condition and rushed him to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. The LAPD launched an investigation into the explosion, which revealed a box labeled “Cash Game 357,” a 357-shot aerial firework notorious for its rapid-fire barrage of continuous explosions.
It is important to note that such heavy-duty fireworks are illegal in California, where even “safe and sane” fireworks are heavily regulated. The authorities are yet to confirm the specific type of firework that caused the fatal blast. Following the incident, the LAPD Bomb Squad, Hazardous Materials Unit, and detectives from the Major Crimes Division were deployed to the scene for further investigation.
Despite the tragic outcome, the LAPD assured the public that there were no ongoing safety concerns in the neighborhood. They also seized a large quantity of illegal pyrotechnic devices and safely stored any explosive materials found at the site. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers associated with illegal fireworks and the importance of adhering to safety regulations to prevent such tragedies from occurring in the future.
