Study finds AR/VR sports games boost mental health and social connection
Augmented and virtual reality sports games have been gaining popularity in recent years, offering a new way for people to engage in physical activity in a digital environment. But beyond just being a fun pastime, researchers at Michigan State University have found that these games can have a positive impact on mental health and social connection.
In a study led by Assistant professors Sanghoon Kim and Sangchul Park from MSU’s Department of Kinesiology, the researchers explored the psychological benefits of playing augmented and virtual reality sports games. Published in the International Journal of Human-Computer Interaction, the study revealed that these games can promote psychological well-being by helping players feel connected to others and engage in real-time communication, especially for those experiencing loneliness.
The study involved 345 individuals who played various AR/VR sports games like table tennis, bowling, or billiards. Participants completed a questionnaire to assess their game involvement, psychological well-being, loneliness, and other factors. The results showed that those who were more engaged in gaming exhibited higher levels of psychological well-being, shedding light on the positive effects of AR/VR gaming on mental health.
One of the key findings was that AR/VR sports games can create a strong sense of social connection through avatars, real-time communication, and nonverbal cues. This shared presence with others in the virtual environment played a significant role in improving players’ psychological well-being. The researchers emphasized the power of social presence in these games, highlighting the importance of human-like interactions in virtual settings.
Moreover, the study suggested that AR/VR sports games could potentially be used in therapeutic interventions for individuals experiencing loneliness or mental health challenges. By providing a platform for social interaction and connection, these games may offer a unique solution to combat feelings of isolation and improve overall well-being.
However, the researchers also noted that not all individuals may benefit from social AR/VR gaming, as some users may feel uncomfortable or struggle to engage in virtual interactions. They emphasized the need for education and regulation in how these games are used to support mental health and social engagement.
In conclusion, the study at Michigan State University highlights the potential of AR/VR sports games in promoting mental health and social connection. By harnessing the power of virtual environments to create meaningful social interactions, these games offer a unique opportunity to enhance psychological well-being and combat feelings of loneliness. As technology continues to advance, the integration of augmented and virtual reality into mental health interventions could pave the way for innovative approaches to improving overall wellness.
