Ted Turner, cable television pioneer and CNN founder, dies at 87

The world of media and television has lost a pioneer with the passing of Ted Turner at the age of 87. Known for launching CNN, the first 24-hour cable news network, Turner made a significant impact on the industry and beyond.

Mark Thompson, chairman and CEO of CNN Worldwide, described Turner as an “intensely involved and committed leader” who always trusted his own judgment. Turner’s influence on CNN is undeniable, with Thompson noting that he is the “presiding spirit” of the network.

Turner’s family announced his passing, stating that he died peacefully surrounded by loved ones. Described as warm and unpretentious despite his success, Turner was known for his humility and approachability.

Born in Cincinnati and raised in Savannah, Georgia, Turner began his career in the television business in the 1970s. He acquired an Atlanta UHF station, which later became TBS, a groundbreaking basic cable station. In 1980, Turner launched CNN, setting the stage for the future of cable news.

CNN quickly became a leader in news coverage, reporting on major events such as the 1982 Lebanon War and the 1986 Challenger explosion. Turner’s company expanded to include successful brands like Cartoon Network, TNT, and Turner Classic Movies.

Outside of media, Turner was a philanthropist, environmentalist, and sports team owner. He founded the Turner Foundation, supporting initiatives for air and water quality, climate protection, and wildlife habitat preservation. Turner also made a historic pledge to the United Nations and created the United Nations Foundation.

In addition to his business ventures, Turner was an avid sailor and won the America’s Cup in 1977. He founded Ted’s Montana Grill, a successful chain of restaurants promoting sustainable bison dishes. Turner’s legacy extends beyond media, with his impact felt in various fields.

Turner’s contributions were recognized with numerous awards, including Time Magazine’s “Man of the Year” in 1991 and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. He leaves behind a lasting legacy and is survived by his five children, fourteen grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

As the world mourns the loss of Ted Turner, his pioneering spirit and commitment to making a difference will continue to inspire generations to come.
