Tencent Strikes European Deal With ADN for ‘Blades of the Guardians’

Chinese streaming giant Tencent has recently made a significant deal with France-based Animation Digital Network (ADN) for the distribution rights of its martial arts epic series, “Blades of the Guardians.” This collaboration will see the animated series being featured on ADN’s subscription VOD and OTT platforms, adding to their diverse range of premium global content offerings.

The agreement comes as part of Tencent Video’s strategic efforts to position animation as a key growth driver for its platform. By partnering with international entities like ADN, Tencent aims to introduce high-quality Chinese animation to a wider audience on a global scale.

“Blades of the Guardians,” which took three years to produce, combines visually stunning action sequences with rich storytelling inspired by the historical Sui and Tang dynasties. Produced by Tencent Penguin Pictures and Coloured Pencil Animation, the series aims to merge historical accuracy with a modern aesthetic.

Based on a popular Chinese comic, the storyline follows the journey of mercenary Dao Ma as he navigates the treacherous deserts of the Western Regions. What starts as a simple escort mission to Chang’an quickly evolves into a complex narrative of imperial intrigue, leading to a series of intense conflicts, betrayals, and revelations.

Tencent Video has established itself as a dominant player in China’s streaming landscape, offering a diverse library of content ranging from dramas and documentaries to animation and sports programming. With a growing focus on original animated content, Tencent is actively engaging in co-productions with renowned studios worldwide to create projects with universal appeal. This move aligns with the increasing popularity of Chinese features among global audiences, especially at the box office.

The announcement of the “Blades of the Guardians” deal was made during the prestigious Annecy International Animation Film Festival, underscoring Tencent’s commitment to elevating Chinese animation on a global platform. By showcasing their dedication to expanding the reach of Chinese animation, Tencent is paving the way for more collaborations and partnerships in the international animation industry.

This exciting partnership between Tencent and ADN signifies a significant step towards promoting cultural exchange and showcasing the creativity and talent within the animation industry. As “Blades of the Guardians” makes its way to audiences worldwide, it promises to captivate viewers with its unique blend of historical elements and contemporary storytelling.
