‘The Mandalorian and Grogu’ opens below ‘Solo’ in weakest Disney-era ‘Star Wars’ debut

Disney’s most recent installment in the “Star Wars” franchise, titled “The Mandalorian and Grogu,” had a domestic opening weekend that fell short compared to other recent releases in the series. Despite this, Disney is focusing on other revenue streams such as merchandise, Disney+, and theme park attractions related to the franchise.

“The Mandalorian and Grogu” brought in an estimated $82 million domestically during its first three days in theaters, exceeding initial projections of $80 million. However, this debut was lower than the opening weekend of 2018’s “Solo: A Star Wars Story,” which debuted at $84 million and was previously the lowest-opening film of the Disney “Star Wars” era.

“The Mandalorian” marked the first new “Star Wars” film to hit theaters in seven years, with analysts predicting it to surpass $100 million domestically over the Memorial Day weekend. Internationally, the film raked in approximately $63 million.

IMAX and Dolby Cinema accounted for 41% of tickets sold, with standard tickets averaging $16.01 and premium tickets averaging $19.43, according to EntTelligence data.

The film is based on the popular Disney+ series “The Mandalorian,” which is the most-watched original show on the streaming service, accumulating over 1.3 billion hours of watch time globally.

Disney’s strategy for the “Star Wars” franchise includes merchandise, streaming, theme parks, and ticket sales, with “Star Wars” generating over $1 billion in retail sales annually, even without a new theatrical release.

Additionally, Disney has integrated “Star Wars” elements into its domestic theme parks, updating rides like “Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run” with new Grogu missions and bringing BDX droids from the film to Disneyland’s “Galaxy’s Edge” area.

Furthermore, Disney has partnered with Epic Games to incorporate “Star Wars” content into the popular game “Fortnite,” introducing new environments, characters, vehicles, and cosmetic items tied to the film release.

Official box office numbers for the film were expected to be released later on Monday.
