TikTok building new version of app ahead of expected US sale: report
TikTok is currently in the process of developing a new version of its app specifically for users in the United States, in anticipation of an impending sale of the app to a consortium of investors. This news was reported by The Information over the weekend, citing sources who chose to remain anonymous.
This development comes on the heels of President Trump’s announcement on Friday that he will initiate discussions with China early this week regarding a potential deal involving TikTok.
Trump mentioned that the United States has essentially finalized a deal for the sale of the TikTok short-video app.
Last month, Trump extended the deadline for China-based ByteDance to divest TikTok’s U.S. operations until September 17.
According to the report, TikTok has formulated a strategy to release the new app on U.S. app stores on September 5.
The report also suggested that TikTok users will eventually need to download the new app in order to continue using the service, although the current app will remain functional until March of next year, subject to potential timeline adjustments.
At the time of writing, TikTok has not provided any comments in response to a request from Reuters. Reuters has not independently verified the information in the report.
