Toyota recalls 141,000 Prius vehicles over doors that have risk of opening while driving

Toyota Recalls 141,000 Prius and Prius Prime Vehicles Over Rear Door Issue

Toyota has issued a recall for approximately 141,000 Prius and Prius Prime vehicles due to a potential safety issue with the rear doors. According to a report from the Department of Transportation, the rear doors of these vehicles can unexpectedly open while the car is in motion.

The recall affects 2023–2026 Toyota Prius models, 2023–2024 Prius Prime vehicles, and 2025–2026 Prius Plug-In Hybrid models sold in the U.S.

The problem is related to an electric rear door lock system that may malfunction if water enters a door switch, leading to a possible short circuit. In certain circumstances, the rear door could unlatch if it is not properly locked.

If the door were to open while driving, it could pose a risk of injury to occupants, especially rear-seat passengers. Toyota has stated that a warning notification may appear on the dashboard and a buzzer may sound if the switch is activated while the vehicle is in motion.

While the exact number of affected vehicles is unknown, Toyota identified the issue through internal testing and a reported incident overseas.
