Travis Decker search: Officials say remains believed to be dad accused of killing 3 girls
The Chelan County Sheriff’s office recently announced that remains believed to be those of Travis Decker, the 32-year-old father accused of murdering his three young daughters near a Washington campground, were discovered in a remote wooded area south of Leavenworth. While positive identification is still pending, preliminary findings indicate that the remains likely belong to Decker.
Travis Decker, an Army veteran, was wanted for three counts of first-degree murder and three counts of first-degree kidnapping after his daughters — Paityn Decker, 9; Evelyn Decker, 8; and Olivia Decker, 5 — went missing following a planned visitation with him on May 30. Tragically, the girls were later found dead near the Rock Island Campground in Chelan County, Washington.
The search for Decker sparked a massive manhunt involving hundreds of people from various agencies and organizations. Despite multiple reported sightings in Idaho and Washington, Decker remained elusive. Authorities cautioned the public that Decker should be considered armed and dangerous, offering a reward of up to $20,000 for information leading to his arrest.
An autopsy revealed that the girls died from suffocation, ruling their deaths as homicides. Additionally, DNA evidence found on Decker’s truck, including bloody handprints, pointed to him as the prime suspect. Decker’s ex-wife, Whitney Decker, expressed gratitude for the ongoing law enforcement efforts and the outpouring of support from around the world.
Travis Decker’s history of mental health struggles, including PTSD, raised concerns about his well-being and stability. Despite restrictions on his visitation rights due to these issues, there were no apparent warning signs before the tragic events unfolded.
As the investigation continues, authorities remain determined to seek justice for the victims and their family. The FBI recently conducted an extensive grid search in the Rock Island Campground area, uncovering several items, including bones, for further testing. The community remains vigilant as they await the final confirmation of the remains and the resolution of this heartbreaking case.
