Trump Booed at US Open Men’s Final Tennis Match

President Donald Trump made a surprising appearance at the U.S. Open men’s final in Queens, his hometown borough in New York City. However, his presence was met with a mixed reaction from the crowd, with some fans booing and others clapping as he was shown on the jumbotrons at Arthur Ashe Stadium during the singing of the U.S. national anthem.

The boos were clearly audible on ABC’s telecast of the event, while tennis journalist Ben Rothenberg reported that there were also some attendees who showed their support by clapping. This reaction came before the start of the championship match between No. 1 Jannik Sinner from Italy and No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz from Spain.

The USTA had sent a memo to media partners requesting them to censor any disruptions or reactions in response to Trump’s attendance at the event. Despite this, ESPN, which was broadcasting the U.S. Open men’s final nationally on ABC, aired the crowd’s reaction to the president. Trump was attending the event as a guest of Rolex, in the luxury watchmaker’s private suite.

The start of the Sinner-Alcaraz match was delayed by half an hour due to traffic delays and additional security screening procedures put in place because of Trump’s attendance. The championship match finally began around 2:48 p.m., with long lines of people still waiting to enter the stadium as shown on ESPN’s coverage.

This was not the first time Trump had been booed at the U.S. Open. His previous appearance at the event was in 2015 when he was still a candidate vying for the Republican nomination for president, and he was met with loud boos then as well.

The exclusive coverage of the 2025 U.S. Open tennis tournament concluded with the men’s championship match on ABC, ESPN Deportes, and the ESPN streaming app. The coverage began at 1 p.m. ET with a preview special on ABC.

Overall, Trump’s presence at the U.S. Open stirred up mixed reactions from the crowd, highlighting the divisive nature of his public appearances. Despite efforts to censor reactions to his attendance, the boos and claps were evident, showing the varying opinions of the spectators in attendance.
