Trump says he’s firing Fed Reserve Board Governor Lisa Cook
President Donald Trump has made a controversial decision to remove Lisa Cook, a Federal Reserve Board Governor, from her position. This announcement came in the form of a letter addressed to Cook that was posted on social media Monday night. In the letter, Trump cited “sufficient evidence” that Cook had made false statements in mortgage agreements, leading to a referral from Trump’s Federal Housing Finance Agency to the Department of Justice for her removal.
The letter emphasized that Cook’s alleged misconduct exhibited gross negligence in financial transactions, calling into question her competence and trustworthiness as a financial regulator. As a result, Trump stated that he had determined her immediate removal from office was necessary to faithfully execute the law.
This decision follows a call from Trump last week for Cook to resign, prompted by allegations made by Bill Pulte, the director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency. Pulte’s letter to U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi accused Cook of falsifying bank documents and property records to secure more favorable loan terms, potentially amounting to mortgage fraud.
In response to these allegations, Cook issued a statement to ABC News, expressing her determination not to be bullied into stepping down from her position. She acknowledged the seriousness of the questions raised and committed to providing accurate information to address any legitimate concerns about her financial history.
Cook, who was nominated by former President Joe Biden in 2022, holds a term on the board of governors until January 2038. She made history as the first Black woman to serve on the Federal Reserve Board of Governors.
As this story continues to develop, it is important to stay tuned for updates on this significant decision and its implications for the Federal Reserve Board.
