Trump’s deportation efforts could impact these industries and states that rely on undocumented workers

The Trump administration has once again ramped up its efforts for workplace immigration enforcement, targeting farms, hotels, and restaurants in a renewed crackdown. President Trump’s “border czar,” Tom Homan, emphasized that criminals are the primary focus of these operations, but undocumented workers across various industries are feeling the impact.

The administration argues that undocumented workers drive down wages and snatch jobs from American-born workers. However, industries like hospitality, farming, construction, and manufacturing heavily rely on these workers to fill essential roles that are challenging to replace with domestic labor. Undocumented immigrants play a significant role in the workforce, not only in blue states like California and New Jersey but also in states that supported Trump in the 2024 election, such as Texas, Florida, and Nevada.

A closer look at industries reveals that undocumented workers are integral to sectors like household work, landscaping, crop farming, meat processing, apparel manufacturing, and construction. These workers make up a substantial percentage of the workforce in these industries, with some occupations having even higher concentrations of undocumented workers. However, due to the lack of direct data on legal status in the U.S. Census, the exact number of unauthorized workers remains uncertain.

The deportation push has sparked concerns among industry leaders, with the American Farm Bureau Federation warning that it could lead to disruptions in operations and inflated food prices for consumers. Research suggests that deporting undocumented workers could actually result in fewer jobs for native-born workers, impacting various sectors of the economy.

The distribution of undocumented workers is not confined to specific states, as both blue and red-leaning states have a significant share of these workers. States like Nevada, Texas, California, and New York have a substantial population of undocumented workers, with some facing staffing issues in critical industries due to the crackdown. While the White House remains focused on removing criminal illegal aliens, the broader impact on the workforce and economy remains a point of contention.

As the administration continues its immigration enforcement efforts, the consequences on industries, workers, and the economy are becoming more apparent. Striking a balance between enforcing immigration laws and ensuring the smooth functioning of essential industries remains a challenge in the ongoing debate surrounding undocumented workers in the United States.
