UCLA earns No. 1 seed for NCAA baseball tournament ahead of offensive juggernaut Georgia Tech
UCLA Clinches No. 1 Seed in NCAA Baseball Tournament
The NCAA Baseball Tournament selection committee announced on Monday that UCLA has secured the top seed for the upcoming tournament. UCLA had an impressive regular season, finishing with a record of 51-6 and sweeping both the Big Ten Conference regular-season and tournament titles. The Bruins have been ranked No. 1 by Baseball America throughout the season and are entering the tournament with the most wins since 2022.
The tournament will kick off on Friday with 16 double-elimination regionals, with the winners advancing to the best-of-three super regionals. The ultimate goal for all teams is to make it to the College World Series in Omaha, which is set to begin on June 12.
UCLA’s success this season can be attributed to their strong pitching staff, led by ace Logan Reddeman and closer Ethan Hawk, who have a combined ERA of 3.31. In addition, shortstop Roch Cholowsky is projected to be the top pick in the upcoming MLB draft, and along with teammates Will Gasparino and Mulivai Levu, they have hit a total of 57 home runs.
Joining UCLA as top seeds in the tournament are Georgia Tech, Georgia, Auburn, North Carolina, Texas, Alabama, and Florida. These top eight seeds are guaranteed to host a super regional if they advance through the regionals.
The Southeastern Conference leads the pack with 12 teams selected for the tournament, followed by the ACC with nine teams, the Big 12 with six, the Sun Belt with five, and the Big Ten with four. Some notable teams that received at-large bids include Liberty, Kentucky, Texas State, and Troy.
Unfortunately, some teams were left out of the tournament, including Mercer, Michigan, Pittsburgh, and TCU. LSU, the defending national champion, did not make the cut this year, becoming the seventh program to win the title and miss out on a regional the following year.
As the tournament approaches, all eyes will be on UCLA as they aim to continue their dominant run and make a strong push for the College World Series title. Stay tuned for more updates on the NCAA Baseball Tournament as the action unfolds.
