United Airlines, Special Olympics partner in program at Denver airport
Four employees at United Airlines are shining examples of dedicated and hardworking individuals that any company would be lucky to have on their team. They consistently show up early for work, receive praise for their helpfulness, and even forget to take vacation time because they are so committed to their roles.
These four employees are part of a groundbreaking initiative at United known as the Special Olympics Service Ambassador program. Launched in 2019 during National Disability Employment Awareness Month, this program has allowed 18 individuals across United’s system to embark on new careers. It is considered an industry first, with plans to expand to more locations like Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Newark.
The ambassadors, who work part-time as customer service representatives at Denver International Airport, recently celebrated their fourth year on the job. Helene Carmona Schmidt, a customer representative and mentor to the employees, emphasizes that this is not just a temporary program but a lasting pathway to employment with full benefits.
Before joining United, these ambassadors excelled in their participation with Special Olympics Colorado, showcasing their skills and dedication at competitions worldwide. One such ambassador, Field, even had the opportunity to work as a reporter at WWE’s WrestleMania XL in Philadelphia.
McElroy, another ambassador, expresses his gratitude for his position at United, calling it his “No. 1 job ever.” He takes pride in arriving early, getting prepared for his shift, and working alongside his supportive team, including United’s managing director of customer service in Denver, Stephen Stoute.
Atkinson, a dedicated employee and Special Olympics athlete, emphasizes the importance of making a positive impact on travelers passing through the airport. She also contributes to Lady Gaga’s Channel Kindness, further showcasing her passion for helping others.
Riley, a long-time Special Olympics athlete, enjoys interacting with passengers at United and takes pride in providing assistance with their travel needs. He appreciates working with Stoute and values the opportunity to engage with travelers from all walks of life.
Overall, these ambassadors are held to the same standards as any other United employee and have proven themselves to be valuable team members. Their presence in visible roles at the airport is not only a testament to their capabilities but also serves to challenge societal perceptions about individuals with disabilities in the workplace.
Their dedication, commitment, and hard work are making a positive impact not only within United Airlines but also on the broader community, paving the way for a more inclusive and diverse workforce.
