Upstate NY teen allegedly murdered girlfriend, 14, after she said she was pregnant’
An Upstate New York teenager has been charged with the murder of his 14-year-old girlfriend, Samantha Humphrey, after she told him she was pregnant and he expressed that he wanted nothing to do with the baby, according to prosecutors. The tragic incident occurred more than two years ago when Humphrey’s body was found in the Mohawk River, having been strangled.
The teen, now 17 years old, has been charged with second-degree murder in connection with Humphrey’s death. The indictment was unsealed recently, shedding light on the details of the case. Humphrey, a resident of Schenectady, had gone missing for three months before her body was discovered in the river.
Humphrey’s mother, Jaclyn, revealed to CBS6 that her daughter had been in a relationship with the accused teen and that they had an argument on the night she went missing. It is believed that Samantha thought she was pregnant with the teen’s child, and he did not want to take responsibility for it, leading to a tragic turn of events.
The teen has also been charged with theft in addition to the murder of Humphrey. Due to his age at the time of the crime, he faces a maximum sentence of 15 years to life, which is less than the 25 years to life he would have faced as an adult. The suspect pleaded not guilty in Schenectady County Court and has been remanded to a juvenile detention center pending trial.
The timeline of events leading up to Humphrey’s disappearance and subsequent murder paint a heartbreaking picture of a young life cut short. She was last seen alive on November 25, 2022, wearing specific clothing that helped in the identification of her remains. Her cellphone and a jacket matching the description of what she was wearing on the night she disappeared were found within the first week of her going missing.
The trial for the accused teen is not expected to begin until next year, as per the district attorney’s office. The community continues to mourn the loss of Samantha Humphrey and seeks justice for her tragic and untimely death.
