US rower speaks on final day of Atlantic Ocean solo journey from Spain to Antigua
Taryn Smith, a 25-year-old woman, has successfully completed her solo rowing journey across the Atlantic Ocean, spanning a distance of 3,000 miles from her starting point in La Gomera, Spain. Over the course of 46 days, Smith paddled approximately 10 to 12 miles per day until she reached the shores of Antigua in the Caribbean. Her triumphant arrival was shared on social media and YouTube, where she expressed gratitude for the support she received throughout her challenging expedition.
The World’s Toughest Row, organized by Atlantic Campaigns, is an extreme endurance race that attracts individuals from around the world to test their limits against Mother Nature by rowing thousands of kilometers across the Atlantic or Pacific Ocean. Smith, who documented her journey on Instagram for her 620,000 followers, encountered rain and rough seas but found solace in the beauty of sunrises and playful encounters with dolphins along the way.
Despite facing challenging conditions, Smith remained resilient and motivated, drawing inspiration from the natural wonders she encountered. She shared emotional moments of encountering dolphins swimming alongside her, providing companionship during her lonely days at sea. Equipped with meals, snack packs, and a water maker on her watercraft, Smith also had a cabin at the stern of the boat for rest during nighttime.
Having worked at Redfish Lake Lodge in Idaho, an adventure hospitality resort, Smith’s love for travel and adventure led her to embark on the World’s Toughest Row after reading about it in a Vogue article. Despite having no prior rowing experience, she dedicated three years to training for the challenge, driven by her passion for adventure and the opportunity to empower school-aged girls through her chosen nonprofit, Girls on the Run.
Smith’s journey serves as a testament to the power of determination, resilience, and the beauty of the natural world. Her story is one of courage, strength, and unwavering dedication to pushing boundaries and embracing new challenges. As she celebrates her remarkable achievement, Smith’s inspiring voyage will continue to resonate with adventurers and dreamers around the world.
