Vandals ruin NY county’s patriotic 4th of July celebration with hateful graffiti: ‘Gross disrespect’
A group of vandals wreaked havoc on a July Fourth celebration in Putnam County, New York by defacing a large replica of the Declaration of Independence with hateful graffiti. The offensive messages included phrases such as “free Palestine,” “abolish ICE,” and “500 years of genocide,” completely disrespecting the historic document and the values it represents.
County Executive Kevin Byrne condemned the actions of the vandals, calling their behavior “grossly disrespectful” and “anti-American.” The replica was meant to be signed by locals as part of the county’s commemoration of America’s 250th birthday, but instead, it became the subject of a police investigation.
Surveillance cameras captured the vandalism, and authorities are currently interviewing individuals in connection with the incident. While no charges have been filed yet, the investigation is ongoing to hold the perpetrators accountable for their actions.
In addition to the defaced replica of the Declaration of Independence, another act of vandalism was reported at the statue of Sybil Ludington, a local historical figure known for her brave ride to warn militias of British forces during the Revolutionary War. The statue was reportedly defaced with a white substance, prompting further investigation by law enforcement.
Byrne expressed his disappointment in those who would vandalize such important symbols of American history, stating that their actions are “rooting against the country” and are “anti-American.” He emphasized the importance of celebrating and striving to improve the country, rather than tearing it down with disrespectful acts.
Despite the vandalism, Putnam County officials remain committed to honoring America’s history and values. The replica of the Declaration of Independence will be repaired and displayed at future celebrations, while efforts are underway to restore the statue of Sybil Ludington to its former glory. The community is united in condemning these acts of vandalism and standing up for the principles of freedom, democracy, and respect for all.
