Walmart profits rise in Q2 as more U.S. shoppers search for deals

Walmart Inc. posted strong second-quarter profits and sales, driven by increased demand for groceries and essential items at affordable prices. The retail giant’s performance reflects consumers’ concerns over potential price hikes due to new U.S. tariffs.

In the three-month period ending July 31, Walmart reported earnings of $7.03 billion, or 88 cents per share, compared to $4.50 billion, or 56 cents per share, a year ago. Sales also saw a nearly 5% increase to $177.4 billion.

Despite concerns over tariffs leading to price increases, consumer spending remained robust in July. Some shoppers may have been stocking up on imported items like furniture to avoid anticipated price hikes. Companies like Procter & Gamble, E.lf. Cosmetics, Black & Decker, and Ralph Lauren have already announced or implemented price adjustments due to tariffs.

While Walmart’s performance exceeded expectations, its stock price initially dropped over 2% as earnings per share fell below analysts’ forecasts. The company introduced 7,400 temporary discounts in the latest quarter to offset price increases and maintain customer loyalty.

Walmart’s U.S. comparable sales rose by 4.6% in the quarter, driven by growth in groceries and health and wellness products. Global e-commerce sales also saw a 25% increase. The company remains a key player in American retail, with a vast customer base relying on its products and services.

Looking ahead, Walmart revised its earnings per share outlook for the year to a range of $2.52 to $2.62, up from the previous estimate. Sales are expected to increase by 3.75% to 4.75% in 2025, surpassing earlier projections.

In a challenging retail landscape impacted by tariffs and economic uncertainty, Walmart’s ability to adapt and maintain customer trust underscores its resilience in the market. As consumers continue to prioritize value and affordability, Walmart’s strategic pricing initiatives and focus on essential items position it well for future growth.
