Wannabe thief stabs Long Island cop, then tries to hide: police

The Suffolk County Police Department was faced with a dangerous situation when a knife-wielding suspect attempted to flee from officers and ended up stabbing a police officer. The incident took place in Amity Harbor, where officers responded to a report of individuals trying to steal from vehicles in the area.
Upon arriving at the scene on Gibbs Road near Coolidge Avenue, officers were able to apprehend one suspect, Marcello Martinez, 19, at the corner of East Gibbs Road and Western Concourse. However, his accomplice, Steven Vazquez, 22, managed to escape and was later found hiding under a car nearby.
As officers closed in on Vazquez, he made a desperate attempt to flee and in the process stabbed a police officer in the upper right thigh and slashed him on the chin. The injured officer received immediate medical attention, including the application of a tourniquet to his leg, and was later released from the hospital.
Despite his violent resistance, Vazquez was eventually disarmed and arrested by the authorities. He now faces multiple charges, including second-degree assault, criminal possession of a weapon, resisting arrest, menacing a police officer, and grand larceny.
Martinez, on the other hand, was charged with possession of burglar’s tools and criminal possession of stolen property. Both suspects are scheduled to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip.
The entire incident serves as a reminder of the risks that law enforcement officers face in the line of duty and highlights the bravery and dedication of the Suffolk County Police Department in ensuring the safety of the community.
