WearOS 7 Announced at Google I/O

Google I/O 2026 was a whirlwind of announcements, with Android 17 and Gemini AI taking center stage. However, amidst all the excitement, WearOS 7 quietly emerged as a standout feature, bringing some much-needed updates to Google’s smartwatch platform.

According to Tech Advisor, WearOS 7 introduced standardized workout tracking and improved third-party app integration for heart rate monitoring and media controls. This positions Google’s smartwatch system as a stronger competitor in the wearable market. The platform also promises up to a 10% improvement in battery life compared to Wear OS 6, making it a more attractive option for users.

One of the key improvements in WearOS 7 is the revamped Tiles feature, which now offers more flexibility and dynamic styling. With two sizes available – 2×1 and 2×2 – the widgets on WearOS 7 are now more in line with those found on Android smartphones.

Live Updates, a feature borrowed from Android 16, allows users to receive real-time information in a glanceable format on their smartwatches. This feature can provide real-time progress indicators for tasks like tracking food orders, making it easier for users to stay informed on the go.

Workouts are set to get better with WearOS 7, thanks to an improved third-party workout app experience. Google has introduced a standardized Wear Workout Tracker experience that can be used by any third-party workout app, incorporating features like heart rate monitoring and media controls. This will simplify the development process for smartwatch fitness apps.

In addition, WearOS 7 introduces new media control options, allowing users to select which media controls appear when a media app is opened. Users can also choose where audio is routed when playing media from their paired phone, whether it’s to headphones, a home cinema system, smart speakers, or a connected stereo system.

One of the most exciting updates in WearOS 7 is the promise of longer battery life. Google estimates that users upgrading from Wear OS 6 to Wear OS 7 can expect up to a 10% improvement in battery life. This enhancement could be a game-changer for users who rely on their smartwatches throughout the day.

Developers can now test their apps on WearOS 7 using the Wear OS 7 Canary Emulator, with the full platform expected to roll out to compatible smartwatches later this year. With these updates and improvements, WearOS 7 is shaping up to be a significant upgrade for Google’s smartwatch platform.
