Weight loss drugs could save airlines money on fuel as Americans slim down
Airlines may soon see savings in fuel costs thanks to weight loss drug manufacturers. With the increasing accessibility of GLP-1 medications for weight loss in the United States, analysts predict a societal slimming down effect that could benefit airlines financially.
The link between weight loss drugs and airline fuel savings is directly related to the weight of planes. A heavier aircraft requires more fuel to operate, while a lighter plane consumes less. Airlines have always prioritized keeping their planes as light as possible to limit fuel consumption, implementing measures such as serving pit-less olives and using thin paper stock.
While airlines can control the weight of the aircraft itself, they have no control over how much passengers weigh. However, if weight loss medications like Ozempic and Wegovy lead to a 10% reduction in society’s weight, analysts estimate a 2% decrease in total airline passenger weight. This translates to a 1.5% fuel savings for airlines and a 4% increase in earnings per share.
Using a Boeing 737 Max 8 aircraft as an example, Jefferies Research Services calculated the potential savings. With a decrease in average passenger weight from 180 pounds to 162 pounds, the total weight of the aircraft would significantly decrease. This reduction in weight could result in $580 million in annual fuel savings for the top four carriers in the U.S. – American, Delta, Southwest, and United.
Jefferies conducted this analysis in response to the development of weight loss pills by pharmaceutical companies and a previous report on the relationship between weight loss and fuel costs. With weight loss medications now available in pill form and obesity rates declining, the implications for both passengers and airlines could be significant.
In conclusion, the intersection of weight loss drugs and airline fuel savings presents a unique opportunity for cost reduction in the aviation industry. By promoting healthier lifestyles and reducing societal weight, airlines could see substantial financial benefits in the form of decreased fuel consumption and increased earnings.
