What A 14-Year-Old Cancer Patient Can Teach Us All About Self-Advocacy

Jessi Buchanan, a brave and determined young girl from Kentucky, found herself facing one of the rarest pediatric cancers in the world at just 13 years old. When her mother took her to the doctor on April 28, 2025, they were expecting a routine stomach bug diagnosis. However, they were shocked to discover a mass the size of a cantaloupe on Jessi’s right ovary.

Despite her young age, Jessi insisted on being included in every decision about her own body. She believed that it was essential for her to be part of the conversation, as it was her body and her life at stake. Research supports Jessi’s stance, showing that involving children in decision-making can lead to decreased anxiety, increased sense of value and control, and improved communication between children, parents, and clinicians.

After further imaging and tests, Jessi underwent a significant surgery to remove the mass, her right ovary, part of her fallopian tube, and her omentum. Pathology confirmed that Jessi had mucinous adenocarcinoma of the ovary, a cancer typically seen in much older patients. Given the rarity of her condition, experts from top medical institutions were consulted, but there was no consensus on the treatment plan.

Despite the uncertainty, Jessi took matters into her own hands. She researched chemotherapy protocols, weighed the risks and benefits, and made an informed decision to undergo treatment. Her parents supported her in this decision, emphasizing that her opinion mattered and that she had a right to advocate for herself.

Throughout her treatment, Jessi continued to assert her agency in her medical care. She chose her medical team, requested a therapist for emotional support, and actively participated in decision-making. Her parents, too, learned to trust her judgment and give her the space to navigate her own journey.

Now, in her freshman year of high school, Jessi dreams of becoming a pediatric oncology nurse. Despite facing challenges and encountering doubts from others, she remains strong, patient, and gracious. Her resilience and maturity are a testament to her remarkable spirit and determination.

As Jessi continues to navigate her journey as a cancer survivor, her story serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of empowering young patients to be active participants in their own care. Her advocacy for herself sets a precedent for the future of pediatric healthcare, showing that children can play a significant role in decision-making processes that impact their lives. Jessi’s story is one of courage, strength, and the unwavering belief in the power of one’s voice to make a difference. Jessi, a young girl battling ovarian cancer, is facing the daunting challenge of receiving treatment while living on a fixed income. The costs of treatment and travel to hospitals are adding up, putting a strain on her family’s finances. In an effort to alleviate some of the financial burden, a GoFundMe page has been set up to help support Jessi on her journey to kick ovarian cancer’s butt.

Despite the challenges she faces, Jessi remains a beacon of hope and inspiration. She continues to spread awareness about her condition, hoping that her story will empower other children who find themselves in similar situations. By sharing her journey, Jessi hopes to provide comfort and strength to those who may be struggling with their own battles.

Jessi’s mother, a pillar of support throughout this difficult time, has a valuable piece of advice for parents in similar situations: include your child. Give them a voice in their own treatment and care. By empowering children to have a say in their health decisions, parents can help them cope with the challenges they face and shape them into resilient individuals.

As Jessi bravely fights against ovarian cancer, her story serves as a reminder of the importance of unity and support in times of adversity. Together, we can rally behind Jessi and her family, providing them with the resources and encouragement they need to face this battle head-on.
