Winter Olympics 2026 hockey fans display Greenland flag during USA win over Denmark
Team USA’s thrilling comeback victory over Denmark at the Winter Olympics not only showcased their hockey prowess but also sparked a political statement in the stands. Two passionate fans raised the flag of Greenland to protest President Donald Trump’s controversial proposal to acquire the autonomous Danish territory.
The flag-raising incident occurred during the preliminary round game between Denmark and the US, where the Danish team took an early lead. Vita Kalniņa and Alexander Kalniņš, ardent supporters of the Latvian hockey team residing in Germany, proudly displayed the Greenland flag during warmups and again when Denmark scored the opening goal. Despite the initial setback, Team USA rallied to secure a commanding 6-3 victory over Denmark.
Expressing their solidarity with both Greenland and Denmark, Kalniņš stated, “We are Europeans, and I think as Europeans we must hold together. The Greenlandic people decide what will happen with Greenland, but as it is now, Greenland is a part of the Danish kingdom, and we support both countries against the US.”
However, not all fans at the game shared the same sentiment. Dennis Petersen, a Danish supporter, emphasized the importance of separating politics from sports, stating, “They are athletes, not politicians.”
The flag display and the game outcome sparked diverse reactions on social media, with some fans humorously speculating about the implications of the US victory on Greenland’s status. Despite the political undertones, the focus remained on the thrilling on-ice action as Team USA staged a remarkable comeback.
Trailing 2-1 after the first period, the Americans unleashed a relentless offensive onslaught in the second period, scoring three unanswered goals. Standout performances from Brady Tkachuk, Jack Eichel, and Noah Hanifin propelled Team USA to a resounding victory. The team’s depth was evident as fourteen players contributed points, with each goal coming from a different scorer.
With a dominant performance that saw them outshoot Denmark 47-21, Team USA now sets its sights on their final preliminary game against Germany. Favored to clinch a spot in the knockout stage, the Americans have their destiny in their hands. Whether they secure a regulation win or rely on other results, Team USA’s relentless pursuit of Olympic glory remains undeterred.
