YouTube to roll out new AI-powered technology aimed at identifying teen users
YouTube has unveiled its latest innovation in age-estimation technology, set to revolutionize how the platform protects young users under the age of 18. This new feature, powered by artificial intelligence, aims to shield teens from potentially harmful content by accurately assessing their age based on various factors such as the types of videos they watch, video categories, and account longevity.
James Beser, director of product management at YouTube, explained in a statement on the platform’s blog that the technology can determine a user’s age regardless of the birthday associated with their account. If a user is identified as under 18, the platform will take extra precautions to regulate their content experience. This includes disabling personalized advertising, limiting repetitive views of certain types of content, and implementing other protective measures. In cases where YouTube incorrectly determines a user’s age, individuals can upload identification documents to correct the error.
“We will only allow users who have been inferred or verified as over 18 to view age-restricted content that may be inappropriate for younger users,” YouTube stated in the blog post.
With YouTube being the most popular social media app among teens, according to a recent Pew survey, the implementation of this age-detection technology is crucial for ensuring a safe and secure online environment for young users. YouTube CEO Neal Mohan had initially announced the development of this technology back in February, as part of the platform’s ongoing commitment to enhancing safety features for its users.
In addition to the age-detection technology, YouTube has introduced other safety measures such as supervised accounts, which enable parents to closely monitor their children’s activity on the platform. Leveraging AI to identify and remove harmful content has also been a key focus for YouTube, although recent shifts in policy towards emphasizing “freedom of expression” have been noted since the start of President Trump’s second term in office.
The age-detection tool will undergo testing among a small group of U.S. users in the coming weeks before being rolled out to a wider audience. The technology has already seen success in other markets, as highlighted on the platform’s blog, although specific details on its global implementation were not disclosed.
As YouTube continues to prioritize user safety and well-being, the introduction of this age-estimation technology marks another step towards creating a safer online experience for young users. Stay tuned for more updates on this groundbreaking technology as it becomes available to a wider audience in the near future.
