ZDF Studios Takes Rights to ‘Ancient Superstructures’ Season 4
ZDF Studios has recently acquired the international distribution rights for Season 4 of the popular factual series “Ancient Superstructures.” This upcoming season will focus on the iconic Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, which is set to reach a historic milestone in June.
Produced by Pernel Media in collaboration with RMC Découverte, Histoire, SBS, and ZDF Studios, Season 4 is currently in production and is expected to be completed by spring. ZDF Studios has secured distribution rights for global markets, excluding French-speaking territories and Australia.
“Ancient Superstructures” is known for its unique approach of combining high-end CGI with scientific investigation to unravel the mysteries behind some of the world’s most famous monuments. The new season will feature episodes on various landmarks such as Greece’s Acropolis of Athens, Germany’s Neuschwanstein Castle, and France’s Pierrefonds Castle and Carcassonne.
However, the highlight of Season 4 will be the coverage of Sagrada Familia, where the production has been granted exclusive access to film the placement of the final stone on the basilica’s main structure. This event coincides with the centenary of architect Antoni Gaudí’s death and the inauguration of the Tower of Jesus Christ. Once completed, the basilica will stand as the tallest church in the world, with a height of 172.5 meters.
Nikolas Huelbusch, director of unscripted at ZDF Studios, praised the series for its blend of CGI and scientific investigation, calling the coverage of Sagrada Familia’s historic completion a testament to the show’s relevance. Pernel Media’s executive producer, Fabrice Frank, expressed excitement about taking the series to new heights with Season 4.
